Regulatory authorities conduct regular surveillance programmes to check on compliance of values of nutrients declared for nutrition labelling and nutrition claims. Enforcement actions may be taken on values that do not comply with the labelling and claims regulations. Certain amount of tolerance is usually set between the analysed and declared values.
Different tolerance limit is set depending on the purpose of the regulation, i.e. for nutrient labelling or claims purposes. Several factors that are known to affect the nutrient analysis results are usually taken into consideration. They can include variations in the analytical methods; variations in ingredients /raw materials used in a product, especially natural ingredients; and stability or changes in nutrient levels in ingredients and products over time.
Dr. E Siong Tee will summarise the approaches used by the U.S., Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand in regulating permitted limits of tolerances. The talk will provide the audience with expert knowledge on different markets as well as facilitate discussions and exchange of experiences to harmonise approaches in regulating tolerance limits in Southeast Asia. |
